Superstitions evolved when man did not possess much understanding about science. Man was completely dependent on nature. Reasons for mishaps were not understood by man during that time. There were no machines to monitor the natural processes, such as calamities, earthquakes and disasters. Man was afraid of these mishaps. Knowing no other method, man started spinning stories and beliefs that could protect him from these mishaps. Over the years these beliefs turned out to be superstitions that were followed and believed by one generation after the next.
As the time passed by, many of these superstitions vanished due to development of science. In spite of technological advancements, there are still many superstitions that are followed by people across the world.
